Muito de sua história, cultura e economia deve-se aos incontáveis estrangeiros que desembarcavam em Santos e seguiam de trem para o Brás, para se instalar na Hospedaria dos Imigrantes – hoje Memorial do Imigrante. Muitos optavam em ficar na Capital e povoaram com suas colônias bairros, como Bom Retiro, Brás, Liberdade, Barra Funda, entre outros. O “Bixiga”, tradicional reduto italiano na Capital, foi o primeiro bairro a ser tombado graças ao pedido de sua figura mais ilustre e representativa: o carismático Walter Taverna.

Seo Walter ou Poderoso Chefão, como é carinhosamente conhecido, nasceu na Rua 13 de Maio, quando esta era apenas uma via de terra por onde circulavam vendedores de batata. O menino, neto de italianos, nunca saiu de seu reduto e sobreviveu às grandes tragédias familiares, morando nas escadarias de São Paulo e trabalhando como engraxate, barbeiro, tapeceiro, marceneiro, até que, em 1965, encontrou sua maior vocação, a gastronomia, inaugurando seu primeiro restaurante.

Uma década depois, o empreendedor nato e agitador cultural, colega de Adoniran Barbosa e Clementina de Jesus, foi o responsável por trazer a tradicional Festa da Achiropita para as ruas, que até então se realizava apenas dentro da igreja.

Seo Walter é responsável também por recordes no Guinness, entre eles o maior bolo de aniversário e a maior pizza do mundo. Mas quem pensa que esta figura se envolve apenas em grandes projetos engana-se, já que com todo bom humor que lhe cabe, brinca dizendo que criou pequenos projetos, como o Dia do Anão (20/01) e que, inclusive, foi responsável pela recolocação profissional de muitos portadores de nanismo.

Certa vez, este inquieto cidadão resolveu seguir a tradição napolitana e decorou a rua com um gigantesco varal de roupas. A Prefeitura retirou o extenso adorno, mas a insistência e ousadia de seu criador fez com que em menos de uma semana o varal voltasse a decorar o local.

Parafraseando o também poeta Seo Walter: “O varal está presente em nossos corações. Eles fazem parte das ruas, das favelas e das mansões. O varal que enfeita com suas roupas e trapos coloridos faz o luar e as estrelas, agradecidos”.

A Concheta, sua famosa cantina no Bixiga, foi batizada em homenagem a uma jornaleira que foi precursora do Facebook décadas antes do aplicativo nascer, pois ela sabia de tudo e comentava sobre tudo sem nenhum pudor. Segredos não existiam para a homenageada. Seo Walter é um exemplo a ser seguido. Superou dificuldades, trabalha incansavelmente e, para extravasar, este menino de 84 anos anima as noites de seu restaurante batendo panelas numa sinfonia digna de respeito, afinal, para esta lenda viva, o Bixiga é, e sempre será, um eterno estado de espírito.
