Walter Taverna. - Escadaria do Bixiga - Morro dos ingleses - Campo de Golf no Bixiga. - Fotos: março de 1901 - São Paulo Country Club

O Morro dos Ingleses é aquele local que fica na parte alta da Bela Vista, meio espremido entre a escadaria do Bixiga e a avenida Paulista. 

As fotos saíram em março de 1901 na “The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News”, uma revista que circulou em Londres entre 1874 e 1970. Elas acompanhavam uma carta à redação enviada por um tal Mr. Charles Forbes.

O texto de Mr. Forbes, cujo título é “Saõ Paulo Golf Club” (assim mesmo, com o til na letra errada), explica que o local era bastante aprazível:

“Some short time ago I had the pleasure of reading a rather good article in your pages on the Saõ Paulo Golf Club, which also was read with much interest by many others here in Saõ Paulo. I now take the opportunity of remarking a little further on said club. The ground is very pleasantly situated on a height overlooking the town and surrounding district, and on a clear day a magnificent stretch of country can be seen. (…) The accompanying photos (taken by an amateur, Mr. Phillip H. Dennis) will perhaps, to some extent, tend to show our friends across the sea a little of golfing as played in Saõ Paulo, Brazil”

(Pouco tempo atrás, eu tive o prazer de ler nas suas páginas um ótimo artigo sobre o Saõ Paulo Golf Club, que também foi lido com muito interesse por muitos outros aqui em Saõ Paulo. Agora aproveito a oportunidade para comentar um pouco mais sobre o referido clube. O terreno é muito agradavelmente situado em uma elevação, com vista para a cidade e seus arredores, e em dias claros pode-se avistar uma magnífica paisagem de campo. (…) As fotos que acompanham, tiradas por um amador, o Sr. Phillip H. Dennis, poderão mostrar a nossos amigos do outro lado do oceano um pouco do golfe que se pratica aqui em Saõ Paulo, Brasil.)

Mas é claro que nem todos eram ingleses por lá. Os brasileiros também tinham seu lugar reservado. Como o pequeno José, na última foto, carregando tacos para a inglesada toda.

Hoje em dia, de inglês ele não tem mais nada. Mas quando estas fotos foram tiradas, ele ainda fazia jus ao nome.

The Morro dos Ingleses is that place that is in the upper part of Bela Vista, half squeezed between the staircase of Bixiga and Avenida Paulista.
